Private Label & Custom Supplement Manufacturing: How Yukang Does Both

Most supplement manufacturers don't really do "private label and custom." They do private label dressed up as custom. Here's the actual difference, and how our line is set up to handle both — without telling two different stories to two different sales reps.

The phrase everyone uses, the thing no one actually delivers

"We do private label AND custom." I see this on almost every CMO website. When you push on the detail, "custom" usually means "we'll change one flavor for you at the same line speed." That's private label with a flavor chart. Real custom work is different, and I'll explain why.

Where private label breaks down for serious brands

Private label works for first-product launches. We stock around 80 ready-to-ship formulas. None of them is unique to your brand — your competitor could list the same formula next week. If you've raised $2M for a launch and need 8 months of differentiation runway, stock isn't enough.

The IP you think you have

We've had brands come to us after launching with another manufacturer on a "stock formula with custom label." When they ask for exclusivity, they find out the contract doesn't actually grant any. Differentiation timeline was weeks, not months.

What "custom" actually looks like on our line

A real custom engagement at Yukang: R&D reviews your benchmark and target position, drafts 3 formulation concepts with costed samples, runs pilot batches of 300–800 units for consumer testing, locks the formula in a master manufacturing record, and ships production batches. The IP — formula composition, label artwork, packaging design — belongs to your brand from day one.

Our line is built to handle both without service quality tradeoffs

We run 10 production lines across softgels, capsules, tablets, gummies, powders and liquids. Seven of them are scheduled on a 14-day rhythm that mixes private label and custom SKUs without breaking changeover budgets. The other three are dedicated to high-volume customer reorders. The split isn't theoretical — it's how we keep unit cost low for both groups.

Three brands that ran custom with us in 2026

  • A US DTC brand: custom L-theanine + magnesium stack, launched Q1 2026, now reordering at 12,000 bottles monthly.
  • A UK gym channel: custom pump-formula pre-workout powder, exclusive for 24 months, units in 240 retail outlets.
  • An Australian longevity brand: custom NMN + resveratrol pectin gummy, third reformulation underway, no shortcuts taken on stability.

What you usually save by going custom (and what you don't)

Custom saves you from market saturation on stock formulas. It doesn't save launch time or first-batch cost. The honest breakdown for a 2-SKU launch: development cost runs $20K–$45K (R&D + stability + tooling amortized). That's not cheap — but it's the cost of actually having a defensible product 18 months in.

Have a private label idea that needs a custom twist?

Send me your target market, price point and benchmark SKUs. I'll come back with two or three approaches — one pure private label for speed, one hybrid, one full custom — so you can pick the model that fits.

If you take nothing else

  • "Custom" without IP transfer isn't custom — it's private label with a label change.
  • A real custom SKU takes 7–10 weeks and $20K–$45K. Plan around that.
  • Our line runs both private label and full custom without service tradeoffs.
  • Custom saves you from market saturation, not from launch cost.
  • Lead with the exclusivity contract, not the formula promise.

Frequently asked questions

Do you grant exclusivity on custom formulas?

Yes. Most mid-stage brands secure exclusivity on an annual unit commitment (typically 50,000 units per SKU). Pricing is case-by-case during launch planning.

Can I keep the same formula after switching to a private label model?

Once a formula is yours — i.e., it was developed in a custom engagement — you can move production to another facility or work with us on a private label relationship if you don't need custom dosing any more.

How long does the IP transfer take?

Two weeks from pilot completion. The signed formula IP, label artwork and packaging design move into your brand folder via a secure portal. We retain right of first refusal on production, but ownership is yours.

Does custom mean slower launch?

Yes — usually 7–10 weeks from spec to pilot. The savings come 6–18 months after launch when the formula still has shelf differentiation. The brands that skip this step often pay for it in 2026 reformulation costs.

Can you do "hybrid" launches — one custom, one private label?

We do it constantly. Most growing brands run one flagship custom SKU and 2–3 private label SKUs. The custom SKU defends margin, the PL SKUs broaden shelf presence.
